It is calculated some 40 per cent of Australian
men will experience hereditary hair loss by the time they reach age
40.
There are many reasons why a man might start losing more hair than usual. It could be related to an existing
medical condition or perhaps stress. But the most common type of hair loss is hereditary. Commonly known as
male pattern baldness, it is easily recognised through the telltale signs of marked receding around the hairline and temples.
More Than Hair is Lost
For many men, the advent of hair loss can have far reaching effects. For them, the shock that comes
so dramatic a change in their appearance, and the accompanying lack of confidence, cannot be underestimated.
In response to this, medical research into stemming hair loss, and even the possible reversal of male pattern
baldness, was drastically stepped up.
Follicle Fertilizer
A breakthrough came a few years ago in the form a liquid medicine with the chemical name Minoxidil.
Originally used to lower blood pressure, one of Minoxodil's side effects is hair growth. Through this,
the medicine was introduced in a liquid form to treat androgen alopecia (hair loss). Clinical studies have
shown that Minoxidil 5% lotion is effective in slowing or stopping hereditary hair loss in four out of five
people, and in some cases, its use actually stimulates new hair growth.
It is estimated more than five million people worldwide have used Minoxidil to help keep the hair they have.
The treatment is long-term and continual use is required. However, following successful trials, preparations
containing Minoxidil 5% are readily obtainable in Australia without a prescription.
Alternatives
Meanwhile, for those seeking a natural alternative treatment, it has been suggested that in certain
cases increased hair loss may be attributed to the body's inability to supply the scalp with the nutrients
it needs for health skin growth, with the result that hair growth slows and some follicles become dormant.
The theory is that by receiving the necessary stimulus and nutrients, new hair may again start to grow.
Treatment involves a course of tablets containing highly-refined marine protein, vitamin C and plant-based
silica compounds, specifically intended for this purpose, and used in conjunction with a lotion containing
similar ingredients.
Open a Tin
If all else fails, consider spraying the bald spot with an aerosol men's hair thickener
-- available in one or more shades to blend in and match the exact shade of the hair.
