More and more Australian men are reporting they frequently experience
dry or sensitive skin. Fortunately, there are now skin care products
specifically dedicated to help treat this annoying condition (click
here).
But what is it that causes dry skin in men?
In fact, dry or sensitive skin can be a sign of any number of medical
conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, or an allergic reaction
(contact dermatitis). Then heat rash, ageing, and even cold winter
air can significantly lower the skin’s moisture content, with
the resulting troublesome symptoms of itching, scaling, chapping,
along with a noticeable loss of elasticity and suppleness.
Reactions
There can be other distressing reactions, like redness and persistent
itch, which may be associated with some of the above factors, as
well as the more common complaints such as prickly heat and sunburn
and, of course, shaving rash and razor burn.
Typically, dry skin is characterised by tightness, fine lines, and
sometimes, flakiness. The situation can be aggravated by exposure
to too much sun and wind. Or it may be traced to certain prescribed
medications, or even poor diet so it is important to supplement with
vitamins (click here) for insurance against deficiencies. In extreme
cases, it may be hereditary, stress-related, or triggered by a hormonal
imbalance.
Soaps
Harsh soaps too can have an adverse effect on the skin. This is because
most soaps have an alkaline pH that tends to strip away the skin’s
natural layer of protective oils, leaving it dry and open to infection.
For this reason, ordinary soap should be replaced with a gentle non-soap
cleanser, preferably with a pH of 6.0, which is similar to the skin’s
own pH, making it less likely to irritate. This will also help to maintain
the skin’s natural protective properties.
However, all too often the most common cause of dry skin is simply
the ageing process (click here for treatments), of which a natural
consequence is the slowing down in the production of oil (sebum).
