Dandruff is an extremely common and distressing
problem affecting many Australian men of all ages.
Not only is it a source of embarrassment cosmetically, but if the symptoms are ignored and allowed to
progress to a more severe stage, it may lead to inflammation as well as discomfort.
A common misconception is that dandruff is associated with inefficient hair care.
In fact, this is incorrect: the primary cause of dandruff is believed to be a yeast
called Malassezia, which colonises and infects the scalp.
What or Who is Dandruff?
In lay terms, dandruff stems from a marked increase in the normal shedding of scales of the scalp.
As stated, the root cause of this shedding is irritation linked to the presence on the scalp of
microscopic fungal yeast.
Two Types
Essentially, there are two types of dandruff: dry, and oily.
Dry dandruff tends to cascade down onto the shoulders of your clothes. The scales are small,
fine and white to greyish-white in colour, and often cause itching.
With oily dandruff, the shedding of the scales is associated with in increase in sebum
production, making the scalp oily, and the hair heavy and greasy-looking.
Here the dandruff scales are thicker, yellowish, and cling on to the scalp.
These are also sometimes accompanied by redness.
Easy to Treat
Despite its stubborn nature, dandruff itself is relatively straightforward to deal with.
Obviously, the right shampoo is the key, used as instructed (always read the label),
then regularly thereafter, to help prevent reoccurrence.
Conventional shampoos to treat dandruff usually contain anti-fungal agents. Some
use a tried and tested method consisting of two successive phases. The first uses a
specific shampoo for each hair or scalp problem, with the second follow-up phase of
complementary treatment using an appropriate shampoo with a formula that has been specially
developed to maintain the results of the treatment phases for as long as possible.
Scurf's Up
Ironically, because today's men's hairstyles tend to be shorter or close-cropped,
the evidence of unsightly scurf seems to be much more visible with men. So it is particularly
reassuring to note that the latest anti-dandruff shampoo just in from Italy is an ultra
high-performance product specifically designed with men in mind, combining on-going
control with an action gentle enough to use each day and still keep the 'snow' at bay.
